To identify the correct Ham radio tubes, check the amplifier’s complete model number and suffix on its data plate. The Ameritron AL-811 uses three 811A tubes; the AL-811H uses four 811A tubes; the AL-811HD uses four 572B tubes; and AL-82 variants use two 3-500Z or 3-500ZG tubes. Because transmitting tubes must match the amplifier’s exact configuration, we can also confirm the correct tube for other Alpha, ACOM, or Expert setups.

The tubes do not carry a universal service-life rating, but you can theoretically expect to use them for about 2,000-10,000 hours depending on tube type and several other factors. Replace the Ham radio tubes when normal drive no longer produces expected output after the amplifier, tuning, and power supply are verified.

Excessive plate dissipation, prolonged key-down tuning, high-duty-cycle modes, incorrect filament voltage, and inadequate cooling are the main preventable causes of early failure.

Yes. Keep at least one tested spare of the exact type. Contest, emergency-communications, and remote-station operators should keep a complete matched set.
